The Newborn

So this poem was also written for a school assignment, but then it went on to be published in a poetry compilation for a contest. I can't remember which one (back in 2010), I'm pretty sure it was WPM but may have been something else. Anyway, I don't want to give away the ending of the poem so I won't go into details about it.

The Newborn

Your hair; tiny blonde ringlets
Your cheeks a glowing rose
Your eyes a stormy gray-blue
Above your button nose

Two teeny tiny earlobes
Pink petals as your lips
Your gentle little hand wrapped
Around my fingertips

Your skin is soft as pearl
Your feet are – Oh! – so small
Nine months as my companion
Your due date in the Fall

I longed to hear your laughter
To see your smile bright
To hold you every morning
And tuck you in each night

You look so still and peaceful
All I can do is weep
I curse the stars in Heaven
For you were born asleep

The poem was inspired and written for those who have ever had a still born baby, because I just think it is one of the saddest things in the world.
